The Sundays of May 15 and 22, 2016 became remarkable in the life of Uromi diocese, when in the spirit of the Pentecost, His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr Donatus Ogun administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to a total of 353 candidates across the diocese.
May 15 was the turn of St Benedict – Ubiaja. A total of 218 candidates were confirmed. And May 22 witnessed the Bishop’s presence at Lumen Christi International High School, an institution of the diocese. At this event, the Bishop administered a total of 135 students, making 353 candidates in all, within these two Sundays.
All Masses began at 10:00 AM. One point of emphasis in His Lordship’s homily that cut across all events was the fact that his Lordship noted that among the 7 Sacraments, Baptism is the gateway to the other Sacraments, that is to say it qualifies men and women, boys and girls to be Christians. As Christians therefore, he encouraged all to be steadfast at all times, even in the face of challenges. Furthermore, Bishop Ogun noted that to be steadfast in the face of difficulties and challenges is not an easy task and it is precisely because of this that confirmation is necessary to makes us strong, better Christians and soldiers of Christ.
The Bishop highlighted the gift that the Holy Spirit bestows at confirmation: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Knowledge, Fortitude, Piety and Fear of the Lord. These gifts must be nurtured properly by our conscious efforts so that in us so that our lives may reflect the fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Forbearance, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-control. His Lordship also enjoined the candidates and all present to measure the growth in their spiritual lives using the fruits of the Holy Spirit as a yardstick.
